I just finished my first drawing of an iris. Most of the time that I was drawing I felt somewhat frustrated, because every time I got fresh flowers, they would open so quickly, I didn’t have time to get the line drawing finished before the flower’s position changed. I started over several times. Eventually, I was forced to take photographs and work from those, although I know that is not ideal. I have plans to do a seed pod or another natural subject that won’t change on me for the next drawing!
In trying to only draw from life, I went in for flowers twice. When I didn’t want the iris wrapped or any ferns with them, the florist asked what the flowers were for. I told him how I was practicing my drawing skills. He just gave me the flowers for free both times! I tried to pay and he wouldn’t let me. He asked to see my final drawing, so once I finished it, I took it in to show him. He liked it.
